How to make a fire?

It would be great to learn how to create fire and how to keep it alive. I mean from the beginning, without matches or petrol based fuels. Could someone in Suomussalmi region teach that skill? Creating the fire ourselves we would have something 'real' at the core of our ceremony/performance.
The ashes, if we are burning some wood, could maybe be used too. It is an essential, lifegiving, 'yield' of the cycle.
